200 calories? It doesn’t sound like a lot, does it? But think of them like this: 200 calories are about 10% of an average human’s daily calorie consumption. And, depending on what foods you choose, it can take two bites to eat them. Sometimes the number of calories in food is a bit hard to comprehend – it’s not easy translating the food you eat into numbers. But WiseGeek’s L. S. Wynn has found the perfect way to make them easier to imagine: by placing them on a 10.25″ plate and taking a photo of them.

Calorie density seriously differs from one food to another.

Celery, for example, has very few calories. To consume 200 calories, you’d need to eat 1425 grams (almost 3.2 pounds of them).

Carrots are a bit more densely packed with energy – 1.25 pounds (570g) of these crunchy, tasty veggies equal 200 calories.

Fluids have calories, too. Except for clean water – it has virtually zero calories. But beverages like milk and soft drinks do have them. Drinking one large glass (333 ml, or 11.26 Oz) of milk, or 496 ml (close to 17 oz) of Cola will put as much energy into your system as the plate of carrots above.

But let us take a look at the other end of the spectrum. To eat 200 calories, you need to down half a Snickers bar (41g, 1.45 Oz), a handful (40 g, 1.41 Oz) of M&Ms, 34 g (1.2 Oz) of fried bacon, or about half (75g, 2.65 Oz) of a cheeseburger.

How long does it take to burn 200 calories

To better understand what 200 calories means, let’s take a look at how long does it take to burn them.

On foot, it takes 30 to 35 minutes of walking or 25 to 30 minutes of jogging to get rid of the amount of energy in the half-a-burger above. You need to swim for up to 25 minutes or ride the bike (at a moderate speed) for up to 33 minutes to burn the energy in half a liter of Coke. Using the jump rope is a faster way – it only takes 10 to 15 minutes to burn off a handful of candy worth of energy.

On the fun side, 40 minutes of dancing will burn a bit more energy than you can find in a big glass of milk. And 20 minutes of basketball does the same. And a romantic date that ends between the sheets (which is perhaps the most pleasurable way to burn fat) will also rid you of the same amount of energy.

Burn 200 calories in just 3 minutes?

Sprint interval training seems to be the secret of burning a lot of calories in a very short time. A study published by the American Physiological Society has shown that such a workout can burn a lot of calories in a very short time. The volunteer participants who engaged in 2.5 minutes of intense exercise ended up burning 200 extra calories, despite spending the rest of the day with sedentary activities.
